Instagram unfollowers tracker: see who unfollowed you
Open the data export (ZIP) Instagram gives you to see who doesn't follow you back. Open a newer export later, and the tool also shows who unfollowed you in between. Free, with no login and no app: the file is analyzed in this browser tab and never uploaded.
No ZIP yet? Request it first (step 1 below); you get an email when it's ready. Already downloaded it? On iPhone it's in the Files app under Downloads, on Android in the Downloads folder.
No ZIP yet? Three steps
-
Request your data from Instagram
Open Instagram's download page (opens in a new tab)Your download is usually ready within minutes to a few hours, and you get an email. Then come back to this page.
Which options do I pick?
In Instagram, open Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Export your information → Create export → your Instagram profile, and select:
- Export to device
- Followers and following
- Format: JSON
- Date range: All time
-
Wait for the email
Instagram usually needs a few minutes, sometimes a few hours. Then download the ZIP from the link in the email.
-
Upload the ZIP here
We read your followers and following lists (followers_1.json and following.json), plus pending requests and recently unfollowed accounts if they are included.
Your results
History on this device
Only the account names are stored, in this browser. That's how the next analysis can show who unfollowed you.
Safari can delete data that websites saved if you don't visit them for 7 days. Download a backup file to keep your history, and restore it before your next analysis.
What you'll see
The tool compares two lists from your export, the people who follow you and the people you follow, and matches them by username. Each list gets its own tab with a count, a search field, sorting (newest, oldest, A–Z) and a CSV download.
| Tab | What it contains |
|---|---|
| Don't follow you back | Accounts you follow that aren't in your followers. Shown first. |
| You don't follow back | People who follow you that you don't follow. |
| Mutual | Accounts where the follow goes both ways. |
| All following / All followers | Both full lists, searchable. |
| Unfollowed you / New followers | Changes since your last saved analysis in this browser. Appears from your second export on, if the first result was saved. |
| Pending requests, You unfollowed, Received requests, Close friends, Restricted, Blocked, Removed suggestions | Shown only when your export contains these files and they aren't empty. |
Each row has an Open link to the profile on Instagram. The dates come from your export: when you followed someone, or since when they follow you. The export has no date for when someone unfollowed you, so the "Unfollowed you" tab has none either.
No export at hand? The Try with sample data button shows the main tabs with made-up accounts. The before-and-after comparison needs two real exports, so it isn't part of the sample.
"Doesn't follow you back" is not "unfollowed you"
A single export is a snapshot of one moment. An account on the "Don't follow you back" list may have unfollowed you, but it may also never have followed you (brands, artists, people you followed first), or it was deactivated when Instagram made the export.
To see who actually unfollowed you, you need a before and an after:
- Analyze an export with Remember this result on this device switched on (it is on by default). The tool saves only the account names, in this browser.
- A few weeks later, request a new export and open it in the same browser.
- The Unfollowed you tab lists everyone who was a follower last time and isn't anymore. New followers shows the opposite.
Someone on the "Unfollowed you" list either unfollowed you, deactivated, deleted or renamed their account, or you removed or blocked them yourself in between. A renamed account shows up once as gone and once as new.
Recent unfollowers vs. the "recently unfollowed" file
Instagram doesn't keep a list of people who recently unfollowed you. Your export does contain a file called recently_unfollowed_profiles, but it lists accounts you unfollowed. The tool shows it in its own You unfollowed tab, so it doesn't get mixed up with your unfollowers.
Your recent unfollowers come from comparing two exports: the Unfollowed you tab lists everyone who followed you in the older export and doesn't in the newer one. The export has no unfollow date, so the time between your two exports is as precise as it gets. Compare more often to narrow it down.
How it works
- Request your data. Open Your information and permissions in Accounts Center (some Instagram versions label it Meta Account), then Export your information → Create export → Export to device. Choose only Followers and following, Date range: All time and Format: JSON. Instagram may ask for your password there, on its own page.
- Download the ZIP when Instagram notifies you that it's ready. According to Instagram, the file then stays under Available downloads for 4 days.
- Select the ZIP above. No need to unzip it. The tool picks out the follower files (
followers_1.json,following.jsonand a few related lists) plus your own username from the profile file, and ignores everything else.
Screen-by-screen instructions for iPhone, Android and desktop are in the Instagram export guide and the tutorial.
On iPhone or Android
The tool runs in your phone's browser, so there's nothing to install. The steps are the same as on a computer:
- iPhone: download the ZIP from Available downloads, then tap the upload box above and pick the file from the Files app. Don't tap the ZIP in Files beforehand: that unpacks it into a folder. If that already happened, select the original ZIP, which usually sits next to the folder.
- Android: the ZIP lands in your Downloads folder. Tap the upload box above and pick it from there.
- If the file can't be read: if it is in iCloud Drive, Google Drive or a similar cloud folder, save it on the phone first.
- Next comparison: the saved result stays in the browser you used. Open your next export on the same phone, in the same browser, and not in a private tab.
Screen-by-screen steps are in the tutorial.
What happens to your file
Your ZIP is opened by JavaScript in this browser tab. It isn't sent to our server or anywhere else, and the tool never connects to Instagram.
- Only the follower lists and your username are read. The username tells the tool which account a saved result belongs to. Photos, videos and messages in the ZIP are never unpacked.
- What stays on your device: with "Remember this result" on, the account names from your lists are stored in this browser for the next comparison. Delete saved history removes them. Your theme and cookie choice are stored too.
- Ads and analytics: Google Analytics and Google AdSense load only if you accept cookies. Details are in the privacy policy.
Check it yourself: load this page, turn on airplane mode, then select your ZIP. In a current browser the analysis still works, because nothing has to be sent anywhere. On a computer you can also watch the Network tab of your browser's developer tools.
Three ways to find your Instagram unfollowers
| Method | What you need | Good for | Downside |
|---|---|---|---|
| Check by hand on Instagram | Nothing extra: open your profile, tap Followers and search for a name | Checking a few specific people | Slow beyond a handful of accounts; no list of changes |
| Apps that log in as you | Your password or a logged-in session | Instant results | Against Instagram's Terms of Use; your password is in someone else's hands (see below) |
| Data export + this tool | The ZIP from Instagram's data export | Full lists, who doesn't follow you back, and who unfollowed you between two exports | You wait for the export; results are a snapshot, not live |
Why no login is safer than apps that ask for your password
Apps that show a personal account's followers instantly have to act as you. Meta shut down the Instagram Basic Display API on December 4, 2024 and stated that no Instagram APIs remain for consumer apps. The remaining official API is for business and creator accounts. So an unfollower app for personal accounts works with your password or a logged-in session.
- Your password is in someone else's hands. Whoever has it can do anything you can on your account.
- It goes against Instagram's Terms of Use, which don't allow collecting information in an automated way without Instagram's permission, or collecting and using other users' login credentials.
- You can't see what the app keeps. Logged in as you, it can read your follower lists and more, and store them on its own servers.
The export method avoids all three. Nothing logs in as you, and the data comes from Instagram's own export feature. The trade-off is waiting for the export instead of seeing results instantly.
If you've already given your password to such an app, change it in Accounts Center under Password and security. Then check Where you're logged in in the same place for sessions you don't recognize. If the app connected through an Instagram login screen, also remove it under Website permissions → Apps and websites. Limitations
- Not live. Results reflect the moment Instagram created your export. To check again, request a new one.
- No past unfollowers. Instagram doesn't provide that list, so "Unfollowed you" only covers the time between two exports you analyzed here.
- History is tied to this browser. A private window, clearing site data, or a different browser or device starts from scratch.
- Waiting time. Instagram prepares the export first. A followers-only export is often ready the same day, but Instagram's Help Center says it can take up to 30 days.
- Date range matters. If the export isn't set to All time, older followers can be missing and then show up wrongly under "Don't follow you back".
- Usernames only. No profile pictures or follower counts, because the tool doesn't contact Instagram.
- No actions on your account. The tool can't unfollow or remove anyone. You decide on Instagram. For a long list, the guide on how to mass unfollow on Instagram covers what Instagram says about limits and a manual routine that works in batches.

Frequently asked questions
How can I see who unfollowed me on Instagram?
Instagram doesn't notify you and doesn't keep a list of people who unfollowed you. Download your followers and following from Instagram (JSON format) and open the ZIP here: the first analysis shows who doesn't follow you back right now. Keep "Remember this result on this device" switched on, analyze a newer export later in the same browser, and the "Unfollowed you" tab lists who was a follower last time and isn't anymore.
Is there a list of unfollowers in my Instagram data export?
No. The export contains a file called recently_unfollowed_profiles, but it lists accounts you unfollowed, not accounts that unfollowed you. The tool shows it as "You unfollowed". The followers file only contains the people who follow you at the moment the export was created.
Do I have to give UnfollowTool my Instagram password?
No. There is no login field on this site. Instagram may ask for your password on its own page when you request the export. Here you only select the ZIP file.
Will anyone be notified that I checked?
No. The tool doesn't connect to Instagram, so there is nothing for Instagram to report. Requesting your own data export is private to your account, and the people on your lists aren't told.
Can I check someone else's Instagram account?
No. A data export can only be requested from inside the account it belongs to, and the tool only reads the export you select. If you run several accounts yourself, request an export in each one. Saved results are kept separately per account, so you can analyze all of them in the same browser.
Why is someone who follows me on the "Don't follow you back" list?
Usually one of three reasons: the export's date range wasn't set to All time; the person followed you after the export was created; or their account was deactivated or temporarily unavailable when the export was made. Request a fresh export with Followers and following, All time and JSON, and check again.
How long does the Instagram export take?
It varies. Instagram's Help Center says it can take up to 30 days to get the email with the export link; an export with only followers and following is usually much faster. Once it's ready, you have 4 days to download it from Available downloads in Accounts Center.
Why hasn't my Instagram export arrived yet?
Instagram prepares the file first, and its Help Center says this can take up to 30 days. A followers-only export is often ready within minutes to a few hours. Open Export your information in Accounts Center again: a finished export appears under Available downloads even if you missed the email. Also check the email address you chose and your spam folder. Requesting the same export again doesn't speed it up. A finished export can be downloaded for 4 days; after that, request a new one.
Should I choose JSON or HTML?
JSON. The tool also reads HTML exports, but JSON contains exact timestamps, while in HTML the dates are written as text in your account's language and may not be recognized in every language. Without dates, sorting by newest or oldest doesn't help.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, in the phone's browser. Select the ZIP from the Files app (iPhone) or the Downloads folder (Android). The saved history for the "Unfollowed you" comparison is kept per browser, so open your next export on the same phone and in the same browser.
